Reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) exposure is a combination of removing products that release VOCs and increasing ventilation to dilute VOCs that are still present. Measuring carbon dioxide levels is a good marker for ventilation. You can use the Aranet4 carbon dioxide monitor to see how different actions such as opening windows and turning on exhaust fans change the levels. Lower carbon dioxide means your action improved ventilation.
The Temtop Air Quality Monitor is good for measuring VOC levels as well as formaldehyde and particulate matter in the air. You can use this meter to get a baseline and see how different cleaning products, personal care products, and other items affect the air quality in your home.
The Airthings Corentium Home Radon Detector is good for monitoring radon levels in your home. Radon levels vary over time. The 48-hour radon tests commonly performed during real estate transactions may give you a false sense of safety. Longer term monitoring is best.
If you are in the Raleigh, NC area, renting meters could be a good option. The Aranet4 carbon dioxide monitor, Temptop Air Quality Monitor, and Airthings Corentium Home Radon Detector are part of my air quality meter rental kit. Click here to learn more.
Chemicals can be ingested or absorbed through the skin. Thus, having clean water for drinking and bathing is important. For drinking, I like the AquaTru Countertop Reverse Osmosis System. Reverse osmosis is the most thorough filtration method. Most reverse osmosis systems require plumbing installation. This is a standalone system that can be placed on the counter. You just refill the water reservoir as needed. For showering, I like Aquasana’s shower filters because they effectively remove chlorine and other chemicals while still maintaining good water pressure.
The Trifield EMF Meter Model TF2 is the closest to an all-in-one meter that you can get. This meter measures electric fields, magnetic fields, and radiofrequency radiation. If you combine the Trifield EMF Meter Model TF2 with the Trifield EMI Line Monitor, then you can get basic readings for all four EMFs. The Trifield EMI Line Monitor measures dirty electricity.
The best meter for measuring radiofrequency radiation is the Safe & Sound Pro II, but the cost is much higher. The Safe & Sound Pro II shows you peak exposure and has sounds to help you identify where the radiofrequency radiation is coming from. For example, a high-pitched squeal indicates cellular and fast, rhythmic ticking indicates Wi-Fi.
A Body Voltage Test Kit is also worth considering. A Body Voltage Test Kit will help you determine your electric field exposure while lying in your bed, working on your computer, etc. You can see how actions like unplugging devices, grounding devices, or turning off circuits affect your electric field exposure. With a Body Voltage Test Kit, you are measuring what your body is actually picking up from the environment rather than measuring only the spot where the meter is placed.

Once you have determined which electronics are contributing to your EMF exposure, you can use remote outlets to easily cut power to them when not in use.
I like the Black and Decker remote outlets because they are high quality and have the plug on the side, which allows them to fit well in tight spaces like behind furniture.
If you need an outlet with more adjustability, the HBN remote outlets could be a good option. They have a short cord from the outlet to the plug so can be maneuvered a bit.
Cell phones emit very strong radiofrequency radiation. Using a landline is best, but if you are not ready to make that switch, at least keeping your cell phone farther away is better than holding up to your ear. These air tube headphones allow you to keep your phone away from your head.
If you have landline service, this corded telephone has a lot of nice features and does not emit radiofrequency radiation. Cordless phones can emit high levels of radiofrequency radiation so opting for corded is best.
Many laptops do not have an Ethernet port and require an adapter to be able to hardwire. If your laptop has a USB-C port, you can use this adapter to connect an Ethernet cable. I also recommend using shielded Ethernet cables when hardwiring and ensuring your set-up is grounded.
Many printers emit very strong radiofrequency radiation. This printer does not have any wireless signals.
Finding and addressing water damage quickly is the best way to prevent major mold issues. You can use a humidity gauge to monitor relative humidity and ensure your house stays below 60%. You can use a moisture meter to check for moisture around windows, toilets, and other areas prone to water leaks.
Appliances that use water, like your washer and dishwasher are especially prone to microbial growth. Cleaning your washer and dishwasher regularly can help prevent issues. These are the washer cleaning tablets and dishwasher cleaning tablets that I use.
